macOS Sonoma Software Explained

Apple previewed this year’s Mac operating system, macOS Sonoma, which packs a ton of great new features, from Safari improvements to new screen savers, from video conferencing to enhanced gaming. Work and play on a more powerful Mac. Boost your presence on video calls. Access information in entirely new ways. Boost gaming performance.

New macOS Sonoma Features

Desktop Widgets
macOS Ventura lets you configure which widgets are displayed when Notification Center is activated. In macOS Sonoma, you can have them displayed on your Mac’s desktop at all times. You can also set widgets to fade into the background so they don’t get distracting. But it gets better. If you have an iPhone nearby or on the same Wi-Fi network, you can also use widgets you’ve configured on your iPhone. This gives you access to many of the widgets and information on your Mac.

Safari Profiles
Using your Mac for work and personal activities can be confusing when all your bookmarks, favorites, and extensions are mixed together. Safari Profiles let you create separate profiles for different activities. You can have one for work and another for fun, or if you’re a freelancer, have one profile for each client. Profiles can also be activated using Focus Modes, so you can switch automatically when Focus is enabled.

Safari Web Apps
When you’re working with Safari, you often have a lot of tabs or windows open, and it can be hard to keep track of them. Sometimes, it can be nice to have a web browser for just one website that you use frequently. You can launch the browser for that site when you need it and quit it when you’re done, so you don’t have a ton of pending tabs. New to macOS Sonoma is the ability to create web apps in Safari.

When you visit a website you want to use regularly, click the Share button, then choose Add to Dock. Safari saves it as a small app and puts it in the Dock. If you click the Dock icon to open the app, you’ll see that website and nothing else: no address bar, no tabs. If you want to remove these icons from the Dock but still have access to them, drag one of these web app icons away from the Dock.

Then go to your user folder and open the Applications folder, where they’re stored. If you want, you can put them on your desktop to launch them by double-clicking them. You can also launch them from Spotlight or LaunchPad. And if you want to open the website in the main Safari window, click the Safari icon in the upper right.

Password and Passkey Sharing
Passwords are generally private, but you can share some accounts with friends, family, or coworkers. The new Password and Passkey Sharing feature lets you share credentials with others. You can create a group and choose which passwords you want to share. If passwords are updated, others in the group get the updates via iCloud Keychain. You can also remove passwords or users from the group at any time.

Screensavers
While screensavers aren’t essential to computing and are no longer required with modern displays, they can add an interesting or whimsical image to your computer. A whole bunch of new slow-motion screensavers — similar to what Apple TV uses — are included in macOS Sonoma, and when you log in to your Mac, they become your desktop image. There are categories for landscapes, cityscapes, underwater, and land.

Video conferencing
Video conferencing is becoming increasingly popular, and new features in macOS Sonoma improve FaceTime, Zoom, Skype, and other apps. Presenter Overlay lets you show yourself and your shared screen to give a presentation to others. You can be in front of your shared screen or a circle floating above the screen. New reactions — like thumbs up, hearts, and more — add confetti, balloons, or hearts to your screen. This can be fun for about five minutes.

Improved private browsing
Many people use private browsing in Safari to make sure they’re not being tracked or fingerprinted by websites, but also to keep their browsing private. Cookies and history aren’t stored when you use Private Browsing; when you’re done with your session, caches and other files are deleted. In addition to adding more robust protection during private browsing sessions, Safari will lock your private browsing windows when you step away from your Mac.

Better autocorrect and predictive text
Autocorrect has long been questionable. Improved autocorrect will let you type anything you want, and corrected words are temporarily underlined so you can catch changes and go back to what you typed with a single click if the correction is wrong. And built-in predictive text will make typing easier: If the word in gray is what you wanted to type, press the space bar to autocomplete it.

Game mode
When you’re gaming, you want the game to make full use of your CPU and GPU. The new Game Mode reduces the use of background tasks and improves latency with controllers and headphones for better responsiveness.

Improved dictation
You can dictate and type at the same time on iOS and iPadOS, and Apple is now bringing this feature to the Mac. Because dictation is never perfect, you can make corrections as you go. Using dictation will simplify the process of creating text; if not, you should try it.
